drivebuddyAI, a leading innovator in AI-powered driver safety and fleet intelligence, has been awarded a patent for its facial recognition system designed to operate reliably in dynamic in-vehicle environments. The innovation enables accurate identification of drivers inside the moving vehicle, enabling commercial fleets to ensure driver authenticity and driving hours compliance.
The invention uses computer vision & AI for recognising the driver’s face in a dynamic environment when they are enroute on the long haul. The facial recognition of a driver in a moving vehicle with different lighting conditions, with different accessories like a cap, muffler or a growing beard, makes it challenging to recognize the face consistently and map with different variations. Recognizing a driver is a critical requirement for logistics companies. However, unlike conventional key-based driver identification methods, which are often inaccurate, drivebuddyAI uses camera-based recognition to provide higher precision and predictability. For fleet drivers, attendance is a deciding factor in wages, maximum allowable driving time, prevention of driver impersonation or unregistered drivers operating vehicles, and fatigue management.
drivebuddyAI uses facial recognition in many different areas, starting with driver profiling and a scoring method called CARDs, which was granted a patent a few months ago. Other applications in the product suite that use this patented technology include dynamic language alerts based on driver recognition, driver coaching insights, driver behaviour and performance insights, and identifying driving time and duty time of a driver in real-time. India is increasingly focusing on regulating truck drivers’ working hours to address fatigue-related road accidents and is actively discussing stronger enforcement measures to ensure that commercial drivers adhere to safe driving limits and mandatory rest periods.
Commenting on the achievement, Nisarg Pandya, CEO of drivebuddyAI, said, “Driver fatigue remains one of the most critical yet under-addressed causes of highway accidents. Our patented technology ensures that fleets know exactly who is driving, for how long, and under what conditions. This creates a foundation for enforcing safe driving limits while also enabling continuous learning and improvement for drivers. This milestone reflects our commitment to delivering technology built from the ground up and leveraging AI to enable safer and smarter driving solutions.”
Beyond this, drivebuddyAI has built a strong intellectual property portfolio with 15+ patents in AI vision, edge processing, and cognitive risk assessment, i.e. driver scoring. The company has also achieved key regulatory milestones, including validation under India’s AIS-184 driver monitoring standard and compliance with the European Union’s General Safety Regulation (GSR) 2144 and European New Car Assessment Programme (EURO NCAP) 2026 protocol for driver engagement. This latest achievement further strengthens this portfolio, highlighting drivebuddyAI’s capabilities in AI-driven automotive safety at a time when India is moving towards stricter safety and driver welfare regulations and positions the company at the forefront of technology-driven compliance, driver safety & fleet risk management.
