Air India has felicitated a team of 30 students of KJ Somaiya College of Engineering, Mumbai, for their participation in Formula Student Germany 2016, an international designing competition of formula cars made by students’ teams from around the world. The competition was held at Hockenheim Germany, from August 9 to 14, 2016. Air India partnered with the students to support their efforts by carrying the car on a complimentary basis on its flight from Mumbai to Frankfurt and back .The team of 30 students was also offered discounted tickets for their travel to Frankfurt to enable them to participate in the competition. The formula race car was also safely transported to be showcased in front of an international audience. The event gave the students an opportunity to display their engineering design excellence and also learn other skills.
The Formula Student Germany 2016 competition is held in Germany every year and requires students to design and innovate a single-seater formula car and then to manufacture a functional prototype. Along with this, students also have to develop a business plan and a marketing concept for batch production of the vehicle. The focus is on aesthetics, ergonomics, and use of mass produced components and the designs are judged by experts from the automobile motorsport and supply industries. The teams then score points in various static and dynamic events to decide their overall ranking. The team from KJ Somaiya College of Engineering has bagged the top prize in the Cost Analysis for manufacturing this car at Formula Student Germany 2016. Earlier the team has also been a two time national champion having won Formula Design Challenge 2015 and Formula Student India 2016 where more than 50 teams participated.
