Blame
it on a slow start which ended the hopes of champion Lewis Hamilton of winning
the F1 race in Monza, and it was his Mercedes team mate Nico Rosberg who
finally grabbed the top spot at the Formula 1 Gran Premio Heineken d'Italia
2016 on September 4, 2016. With this win, Rosberg is two points away from the
top slot on the driver’s table. Rosberg’s seventh win of the year brings him
within two points of Hamilton, 250 to 248.
Rosberg
who has had been unlucky in the past finally managed a sweet revenge as he
claimed the No.1 podium finish, leaving Hamilton to the second position.
Hamilton
has himself to blame as he started off with a lot of wheel spin which saw him
being overtaken by Rosberg.
Former
world champion and Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel managed a third place. It
was also heartening to see Force India team drivers coming in the first ten
once again with Sergio Perez coming in 8th and his team mate Nico
Hulkenberg racing in tenth. The young driver of Red Bull Max Verstappen had to
be content with the 7th position.

According
to a Formula One report, Mercedes’ strategy of single-stopping both cars -
starting them on softs and finishing on mediums - eventually paid out
handsomely. Ferrari went for two-stoppers, running supersoft-supersoft-soft,
and though Vettel was catching up bit by bit at the end, it was never going to
be enough to dislodge Hamilton as the Englishman trailed home second, 15s down
on his team mate.
Mercedes
remain well ahead in the constructor’s stakes with 488 points, but Ferrari have
edged closer to Red Bull with 279 to their 290. Williams move back to fourth on
111, with Force India on 108.
