Under the bright blues skies in Azerbaijan's beautiful capital city of Baku, round 8 of the 2016 Formula 1 Grand Prix of Europe was won by Nico Rosberg of Mercedes. The other podium winners were Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari who came in third and Sergio Perez (Checo) of Sahara Force India who drove magnificently to come in third. Perez’s teammate Nico Hulkenberg came in 9th.
With Lewis Hamilton finishing fifth, Rosberg extended his championship lead over his team mate to 24 points.
Sergio Perez, the Mexican from Force India who qualified a brilliant second a day earlier, started seventh because of a gearbox change earlier which resulted in a penalty. Grid drops there were for Toro Rossos's Carlos Sainz from 13th to 18th and Renault’s Kevin Magnussen who started from pit lane, though he had qualified 21st.
As the race began, Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo was promoted next to Rosberg. As the race began Esteban Gutierrez of Haas lost his front wing after contact with Nico Hulkenberg of Force India through opening turns. Perez in the meantime climbed to fifth position. Rosberg was in another league as he kept up the lead from the word go and Vettel soon tailed him all throughout.
There were four retirements because of technical problems with their cars. These included Kvyat who retired around lap 8. Lap 33 also saw Carlos Sainz of Toro Rosso Sain facing suspension problem and retiring from the race. Lap 41 it was time for Pascal Wehrlein of Manor to retire because of bad brakes and by lap 44 Alonso was the 4th retirement.
