It’s five in a row as Mercedes’
Nico Rosberg won the 2016 Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix. Rosberg finished the race 10 seconds ahead of Ferrari’s
Kimi Raikkonen in an incident-filled Sakhir race. The third spot was won by Rosberg’s
team mate Lewis Hamilton who had earlier dropped to ninth on the opening lap
after Turn 1 contact with Williams’ Valtteri Bottas. But the world champion
went on to finish third in his damaged car. Former world champion Sebastian
Vettel was unlucky as his car failed to start following a suspected engine
failure on the formation lap.
Driving in fourth was Red
Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo, while Romain Grosjean put in a great effort to take
his team Haas to the fifth position, ahead of Toro Rosso’s Max Verstappen.
Ricciardo’s team mate at Red
Bull, Daniil Kvyat came in seventh, who was followed by Williams’ Felipe Massa and
Valtteri Bottas , the latter taking a drive-through penalty for his lap-one
clash with Hamilton .
Stoffel Vandoorne finished tenth
to score on his race debut with McLaren, standing in for the injured Fernando
Alonso. The other retirements, all with technical issues, were Toro Rosso’s
Carlos Sainz, Haas’s Esteban Gutierrez, McLaren’s Jenson Button, and Renault’s
Jolyon Palmer who, like Vettel, failed to even start after pulling into the
pits at the end of the formation lap.
