you hear the word estate or station wagon, the first thing that comes to mind
is a soccer mom dropping her kids off for practice. But Audi decided it was
time to break that stereotype and ended up making one of the fastest station
wagon's ever built. The Audi RS 6 Avant is powered by 4.0 litre, V8, petrol
motor and when we got our hands on it only one name came to mind... Michelle
Rodriguez. Remember Fast & Furious?
3993cc monster which sits under the hood of this RS 6 is just looking for an
excuse to stretch out and thunder ahead. The motor pumps out 552.5 horses from
5700-6600rpm and a massive 700Nm of torque ranging from 1750rpm to 5500rpm. All
that power and torque results in a 0-100kmph time of just 3.9 seconds and an
electronically limited top speed of 250kmph which can be upgraded to 280kmph
and 305kmph. So the biggest question in my mind pops up.. Why an estate which
can go so fast? What purpose does it solve?
to be honest at first I was completely puzzled as to why was this car really
made the way it was. But then after spending more time with it I realised, in
the good old days estates were also referred to as travelers. Then like a mad
professor screaming 'Eureka', I just sat there in the RS 6 with an expression
of 'OH' on my face. The RS 6 Avant really does have a lot of space, the boot
itself can hold 565 litres of cargo and if you drop down the second row then
you get 1680 litres of space. So what do you do with so much space? Well for
starters you can fit your bi-cycle in there or maybe even a surf board,
actually you can fit both in together.
essentially this is one estate which can put to shame all those boys running
around in Honda Civics with souped up engines and exhaust kits. But why so
fast? Well come to think of it European highways are simply amazing to drive on
and one can really zip through them, but here in India we don't really have
enough space for a car like this. Or as a matter of fact, any car! Well not
really! India is progressing; there are smart cities and world class highways
coming up with a few already in place. So for those who can buy a car like this
the journey will simply be the highpoint.
Audi RS 6 Avant is not just about space and speed, the car oozes luxury and
finesse as well. The fine craftsman ship of Audi and its resplendent design
language is quite evident on the RS 6. The car showcases subtle lines flowing
seamlessly from front to back with a bold and aggressive stance which can make
any soccer mom drool. On the inside the car features rich and exquisite use of
materials, the dash has been laid out to resemble a cockpit and simply looks
out of this world. The flat bottom steering wheel on the RS 6 puts you in a
racy mood and a cluster of knobs, buttons and lights just add to the fun.
terms of features the RS 6 Avant comes with Audi's adaptive LED Matrix
headlamps, dynamic turn indicators, MMI plus navigation and infotainment
system, Audi side assist, HUD (Heads Up Display), Audi's active lane assist,
Audi phone box and Active cruise control with a stop and go function. The car
is also equipped with the usual power adjustable seats with a memory function,
panoramic sunroof, electrically adjustable and foldable ORVMs to say the least.
RS6 Avant rides in dynamic air suspension on all four wheels and comes with
ventilated perforated disc brakes. The RS 6 has adequate stopping power and
glides over most road surfaces. However one does need to be careful of those
nasty speed breakers and potholes as this vehicle has a low ground clearance of
just 114mm. The RS 6 Avant rides on 275/ 35 R20 Continental tyres which really
stick to the road and ensure enough traction for the wheels. Speaking of
traction the RS 6 Avant also comes with Audi's Quattro AWD system which has
been mated to an 8-Speed auto box. The shifts are seamless unless you are in
sports mode and the Quattro system ensures that you have control over this
vehicle at all times no matter how hard you are pushing it. We did find that
there is a bit of understeer on the RS 6 but that is close to negligible.

steering on the RS 6 does feel a bit wooden but then again it is tuned to be
sporty and the car responds immediately to driver inputs. The seating on the RS
6 Avant is quite spacious and the car can fit five adults with ease. The seats
provide adequate support and are really comfy as well. The car offers the
driver different driving modes and you can select one as per your mood and
condition. The paddle shifters on the vehicle also engage the driver and
playing around on the road in an estate has never been this much fun. The RS 6
can be customised in many ways from the exterior to the interior. Everything
about this station wagon has been designed to make it an ecstatic estate, one
that will woo your senses, thrill your need for speed and do it all while
having practicality engineered into its spaces. The price tag however is not so
appeasing, set at Rs. 1.35 crore (ex showroom Delhi) this car is not affordable
at all but then again it was never meant for the masses.
