It’s no secret that Anand Mahindra, the bossman at Mahindra & Mahindra loves to encourage all kinds of sporting activities, motoring or otherwise. And when it comes to some hard core Indian sport like kabaddi, there is no love lost. His company Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd. (M&M), India’s leading SUV manufacturer has felicitated Anup Kumar, a 31-year-old professional kabaddi player. He is an Arjuna Awardee and three time Asian Games gold medalist. He was handed over the rugged and macho looking Mahindra Thar 4x4 off-roader. At the recently concluded Pro-Kabaddi tournament, Kumar also received the honour of Most Valuable Player (MVP).
Pravin Shah, Chief Executive, Automotive Division & International Operations (AFS), M&M, said that the company is proud to be associated with a sport that is synonymous with the tough and rugged DNA similar to the Thar. Shah added “It’s is my pleasure to felicitate Anup today [with the Mahindra Thar],… who with his explosive performance at the recently concluded Pro-Kabaddi League has personified the Mahindra Thar attitude and is now set to make a personalised statement with the vehicle”.
Kumar said he is pleased to own the Thar and noted that he was “looking forward to owning and driving this stylish off-roader.”
Anup Kumar was born in a village called Palra in Haryana’s Gurgaon district. Kumar was a part of the Indian National team and has won three gold medals in 2006, 2010 and 2014 at the Asian Games. Kumar is also an inspector for the Haryana Police and was awarded the Arjuna National Award in 2012 for his achievements in sports by the Government of India. He was the captain of the U Mumba, Kabaddi team during the Pro-Kabaddi tournament that recently concluded. Kumar took the team which represented the city of Mumbai to finish Runners-up in the tournament. He was also one of the highest bid players of the tournament.
