We all have seen that cartoon 'Popeye the sailor man' in which this
seemingly ordinary guy eats a can full of spinach and can suddenly take on
adversaries twice his size. Well, the recently launched Audi A4 35 TDI seems to
be just like Popeye. When the A4 was launched last year it came powered by a
downscaled 1.4L, TFSI petrol engine. The recently launched diesel powered 35
TDI variant is capable of letting loose 190 horses and gets a lot more punch
than its petrol counterpart.

The new Audi A4 35 TDI is powered by a 2.0 litre, 4 cylinder,
turbocharged diesel engine. This mill puts out 190hp from 3800rpm to 4200rpm
and belts out a hefty 400Nm of torque. When compared to the 1.4 litre petrol
engine, this new diesel is a much welcome addition. To drive, the motor feels
quite spirited and powerful. The engine has been mated to a 7-speed dual clutch
transmission. Gear shifts are smooth and provide a nearly seamless driving
experience. Peak torque is available low down in the range at 1750rpm and pulls
neatly up till 3000rpm thus ensuring a blistering performance every time you
The A4 35 TDI can achieve a top speed of 237kmph and gets a
0-100kmph time of just 7.7 seconds. The addition of paddle shifters ensures you
have the capability of milking the engine for what it's worth. Audi has also
made this new A4 120kgs lighter than its predecessor. That's not all, it is
also 7pc more powerful and 7pc more fuel efficient than the outgoing model. The
sedan gets a mileage figure of 18.25kms to a litre which in my opinion enhances
the versatility of this package. Not only does it dish out healthy performance
figures but it also serves up mileage figures which are class leading for this
Holding true to the heritage of the Audi brand, the new A4 35 TDI is
also immensely pleasurable to drive. You get accurate control over the vehicle
and thanks to a well engineered suspension you also get a very smooth ride. The
steering did feel a bit wooden but is precise to inputs and the braking
performance will only inspire more confidence in this vehicle's capabilities.
Audi has also added various driver aides on the A4 to ensure maximum control.
Also on offer are four driving modes - Comfort, Auto, Dynamic and Individual.
This bestseller from Audi has got a shot of spinach in its arm to
make it a Popeye amongst competitors. It packs the right punch, something that
was previously lacking and with the addition of features such as Audi Virtual
Cockpit, Audi Smartphone Interface and new Audi MMI Display, the new A4 35 TDI
will surely impress.
