There has been a noticeable shift in the two wheeler industry, the domestic sales of scooters has steadily been increasing with a definite trend taking shape. The first quarter of FY 18 has seen a growth of 20.06pc over the total sales of scooters recorded in Q1 of FY 17 with more than 1.6 million units being sold.
In terms of sheer volumes Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India Pvt. Ltd. (HMSI) tops the charts with total sales for Q1 of FY 18 falling a little under the 1 million units mark. Growing at a better pace than the industry, HMSI recorded a growth of 22.15pc over Q1 of FY 17 in domestic sales. The company also recorded a growth of 26.1pc in exports over last year's figures. In terms of domestic sales for Q1 of FY 18 HMSI constitutes 59pc of the total industry volumes.
TVS Motor Company Ltd. was the second best performer in the first quarter of this financial year. The company moved up one rung passing Hero MotoCorp Ltd. in terms of domestic sales figures of scooters. Domestic sales for TVS grew by 30.63pc in the segment in Q1 of FY 18. Hero MotoCorp saw a drop of 0.51pc over last year's sales figures in the first quarter of the financial year and made up 12.73pc of the total sales of scooters in Q1. TVS on the other hand constituted 15.11pc of the total sales of scooters in India.
India Yamaha Motor Pvt. Ltd. witnessed a growth of 6.1pc in their domestic sales of scooters in Q1 and made up 6.6pc of the total sales. Japanese auto manufacturer Suzuki's Indian two wheeler division - Suzuki Motorcycle India Pvt. Ltd. also witnessed a massive jump in sales, growing at 58pc over last year's sales figures in Q1. Suzuki contributed 5.4pc of the total sales in Q1 of FY 18.
