It is official now that the soon to be launched smart hatchback car code named S101 from Mahindra and Mahindra will definitely have a 1.2 litre petrol mill. Spy shots of the S101 have been doing the rounds of the social media of late and this correspondent too caught a glimpse of a few S101 at the Chakan plant tucked away in one corner.
Dr. Pawan Goenka, Executive Director, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, said ,“We are working on a gasoline portfolio for our products. The first petrol engine that will be launched at the time of launch of S 101 is an engine that we developed ground up. Just to let you know it is a 1.2 litre engine. It is a platform series we are doing along with Ssangyong where we have a 1.2, a 1.6 and a 2 litre engine that Ssangyong has. In three to five years all our vehicles will have a petrol option in terms of powertrain”.
Goenka stated this at the launch of the TUV300 on September 10 at Chakan near Pune in Maharashtra.
It is also most likely that before the year is through, Mahindra will be launching its S101 which it could possibly call the XUV100. The name, of course is our guess.
Goenka did not give details of the new petrol engines. With the S101 or the XUV100, Mahindra will be entering a compact family car segment that will have the styling of an SUV.
