Marking the 55th birth anniversary of late Sunjay Kapur, Priya S. Kapur, alongside family members, industry leaders, close friends and colleagues gathered at Sona Comstar’s Gurugram plant in remembrance of his life, legacy and enduring leadership.
A commemorative sculpture of late Sunjay Kapur was unveiled by Master Azarias Suri Kapur and Priya S. Kapur on the grounds of Sona Enclave. The memorial ceremony opened with the lighting of a ceremonial lamp and Vedic chants by children from Iskcon School, Vrindavan. The gathering also watched a tribute film tracing Sunjay Kapur’s journey and heard family and friends share personal reflections and memories.
Among those present were Shraddha Suri Marwah, Sanjay Labroo, Vikrampati Singhania, Raja Kanwar, Kiran Deshmukh, Manav Kapur, Anmol Jain, Vinnie Mehta, Angad Kalaan, Uday Kalaan, Vivek Vikram Singh, Vikram Verma and Ranganathan Balaji, along with other friends and colleagues from the automotive and polo communities.
Sunjay Kapur played a defining role in transforming Sona Comstar from a single-product company into a global automotive technology player. He championed investment in electric mobility well before the industry’s transition gathered pace. Under Sunjay’s vision and leadership, through disciplined restructuring, deeper technology integration and a clear global strategy, he reshaped the company and strengthened its international ambitions.
Sunjay saw the future and steered the group towards electric mobility at a time when EVs were only beginning to enter global conversations. This early pivot proved game-changing, with increased investments in R&D and global competitiveness. He also believed in the value of reform and global collaboration and worked to advance opportunities for the wider industry. Beyond his contributions to business and industry, he was a passionate polo player, remembered by those who knew him for his warmth, sharp wit, infectious laughter and deep belief in teamwork.
Priya S. Kapur, Director and CSR Chairperson, Sona Comstar, said, “This sculpture has been a labour of love for me. Sunjay was larger than life, with an energy that filled every room. If he must stand anywhere, I am glad it is at Sona Enclave, because this was a place he loved.”
She added, “Sunjay was never one to follow a path. He created his own. When our horizon was mostly India, he saw our work running in vehicles across the world. And when electric vehicles were still a whisper on the horizon, he believed in them before the industry itself was ready. Sona Comstar was a single-product company focused on bevel gears. Today we have more than 29 different products across driveline systems, traction motors, sensors and advanced mobility technologies. He championed reforms and global collaborations that would benefit the wider industry, and he never stopped believing in the future of mobility through a globally integrated India.”
