S. Samuel (Sam), former Managing Director of Ceat and Harrisons Malayalam, and former Supervisory Board Member of the RPG Group, passed away peacefully in his sleep on 19 December 2025, at the age of 91.
Samuel’s association with Ceat spanned over three decades. He joined the company in 1960 as a Management Trainee and rose steadily through the ranks to become Managing Director, playing a defining role in shaping Ceat’s manufacturing strength, leadership culture, and long-term growth. He was widely respected for his leadership and exceptional business acumen.
Following the RPG Group’s acquisition of Ceat, Samuel served as Managing Director of Harrisons Malayalam Limited (1988–1996), where he led modernisation and diversification efforts. He was inducted into the RPG Group Supervisory Board in 1993, returned to Ceat as Managing Director in 1997, and continued to contribute to the Group’s leadership and governance.
He worked closely with Harsh Goenka, Chairman, RPG Group. Recalling their association, Goenka said, “Sam was the Head of Operations when I took charge as Managing Director of Ceat in 1984. He was one of the most hardworking executives I have encountered and always forthright in his views. We trusted each other’s instincts, and I drew deeply on his experience to help navigate the company. He was one of CEAT’s pillars. We will miss him.”
Before becoming Managing Director, Samuel led Ceat’s operations and manufacturing functions and was instrumental in setting up the Nashik plant, including the radial tyre manufacturing facility. During his tenure, Ceat strengthened its position in the truck and bus tyre segment and enhanced its global reputation.
As a standing tribute to his popularity, a road near Ceat’s Bhandup facility continues to bear his name. After his retirement, Samuel lived in Bengaluru. He will be remembered with deep respect by generations of colleagues whose careers and values he helped shape.
