A Tata Nexon electric car caught fire in Vasai area in Mumbai, Maharashtra late June 22, 2022. Incidentally, the Nexon EV is the highest selling electric car in India. Though in the recent past there have been several cases of electric two wheelers from brands like Ola, Okinawa, etc bursting into flames and in a few cases resulting in the death of people and property, there were no cases of an electric car catching fire.
This incident of fire marks a first for electric cars in India. Tata Motors issued a statement on its product catching fire. “A detailed investigation is currently being conducted to ascertain the facts of the recent isolated thermal incident that is doing the rounds on social media. We will share a detailed response after our complete investigation. We remain committed to the safety of our vehicles and their users. This is a first incident after more than 30,000 EVs have cumulatively covered over 100 million km across the country in nearly 4 years. Since its entry into the personal EV space in 2020, Tata Motors has been the pioneer in the EV segment with more than 25,000 EVs on the Indian road, out of which over 19,000 are Nexon EVs”, the statement from Tata Motors read.
The Nexon EV has a Permanent magnet synchronous AC motor that delivers 143ps and a torque of 250 Nm. The battery pack consists of 40.5 kWh high energy density lithium ion and the vehicles gets a liquid cooled thermal management system. It has a IP67 ingress protection for motor and battery pack.
It may be recalled that Tata Motors had introduced the new Nexon EV MAX at Rs 17.74 lakh in May 2022, an extension to the Nexon EV for customers who are look for longer intercity travel. The new Nexon EV MAX is powered by high voltage state-of-the-art Ziptron technology and is available in two trim options – the Nexon EV Max XZ+ and Nexon EV Max XZ+ Lux.
