American engine maker, Cummins Incorporation, has inaugurated its 300-acre project at Phaltan in the Maharashtra state of India. The projects at this site that has been awarded ‘mega project’ status by the Government of Maharashtra, is designed to house ongoing and future expansions of the Cummins Group in India. Half of the acreage is set up as a Domestic Tariff Area and the other half as a Special Economic Zone for exports. The first three plants that were inaugurated were the second manufacturing facility of Tata Cummins Limited (A 50:50 Joint Venture between Tata Motors Limited, India's largest Automobile manufacturer and Cummins Engine Company Inc.) producing engines for commercial vehicles, power generation and industrial markets, an engine rebuild center and a reconditioning facility for remanufacturing engines and components. The three new plants have been built on an investment of approximately Rs. 500 crore as the American multinational major is looking to enter new business segments. By 2015, the group sees India’s contribution to its global business rising to 15 per cent from the current 10 per cent and exports from India rising to 40 per cent from 30 per cent, he added. Owing to the scale of investments on its expansion projects, MOUs were inked in 2008 between the Government of Maharashtra and the Cummins Group, towards financial incentives as well as assistance and support in the establishment of the mega projects at Phaltan. With the inauguration of the Megasite, the Cummins Group has become the first anchor tenant at the MIDC promoted SEZ. Columbus, the Indiana-based group, which runs about 10 entities, including Cummins India, has revealed that it had so far spent Rs. 500 crore (US$110.2 million) of the allocated amount for its manufacturing site in Phaltan near Pune. The site includes manufacturing units for diesel and gas engines, power generators and redevelopment of existing engines, it said.
