BorgWarner, a product leader in highly engineered components and systems for powertrains around the world, is supplying its advanced variable turbine geometry (VTG) turbochargers for the newly developed 1.4-litre three-cylinder diesel engines from the Volkswagen Group. Engineered to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions, BorgWarner’s VTG turbochargers boost the performance of the 75 PS and 90 PS diesel engines. Both engines comply with Euro 6 emissions standards and set new benchmarks by improving fuel economy up to 21 pc compared with the predecessor vehicles.
Debuting in the VW Polo, the 55 kW diesel engine powers one of the most fuel-efficient 5-seat diesel cars in its segment and achieves an average fuel consumption up to 75 mpg (3.1 litres/100 km). Based on the modular diesel engine system, the fuel-efficient and low-emission engines will be available for several vehicles from Audi, Seat, Skoda and VW, said a press note from BornWarner.
“We value our successful and long-standing partnership with the Volkswagen Group,” said Frédéric Lissalde, President and General Manager, BorgWarner Turbo Systems. “BorgWarner is pleased to provide its latest turbocharging technology for Volkswagen’s modern diesel engines to achieve optimum power output with improved fuel economy.”
The VTG turbocharging technology provides precise adjustment to the relevant engine operating points for optimum power output. To improve thermodynamics and engine response at very low rpm, BorgWarner’s patented S-shaped guide vanes regulate VTG turbine output by changing the inflow angle and speed at the turbine wheel inlet. The new turbocharger significantly improves engine response and increases efficiency in the low rev band, resulting in increased combustion efficiency and reduced emissions.
