Sonepat in Haryana was one of the 32 odd locations around the world that recently came alive with thousands of athletes running for a cause. Wings for Life World Run, a global race for charity, saw more that 50,000 participants taking part in the race globally. Under the banner slogan ‘Running for those who can't,’ these participants from 164 countries, kicked off with simultaneous starts on 34 long-distance routes, in 32 countries, on 6 continents! With this World Run, the single aim was to raise funds for spinal cord research through the Wings for Life charity.
In India, the Wings for Life World Run was flagged off on May 4, 2014 in Sonipat. The run was organised under the aegis of Government of Haryana and the Haryana Olympics Association. Top athletes like Ashwini Ponnappa (top badminton doubles player), Tania Sachdev (Woman Grandmaster), Olympian Yogeshwar Dutt, Arjuna awaredee Rajkumar Sangwan, former captains of India womens hockey team Pritam Rani Siwach and Mamta Kharab, Commonwealth Games gold medalist Anisha Syed, and Arjuna awardee in wrestling Rajender Kumar participated in the run.
Volkswagen India, as Official Car Partner for the Wings for Life World Run in India, provided mobility support for the event.
