With the inauguration of the 4th assembly line at the Karnataka plant of Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI), India is now the biggest production base of Honda worldwide. The new 4th line of 0.6 million annual capacity at Honda’s Narsapura plant has started commercial production.
With this expansion, the Karnataka plant is now Honda’s biggest plant worldwide with 2.4 million units annual production capacity. In the process, India also becomes No. 1 production base of Honda worldwide. HMSI’s total capacity from 4 plants has now increased from 5.8 million to 6.4 million units in FY’2017-18.
Honda and its allied suppliers have invested over Rs. 5,400 crore in Karnataka. HMSI has cumulatively invested over Rs 2,600 crore directly at its 3rd plant. The 26 suppliers of the company have invested an additional Rs 2,800 crore and set up ancillary plants in Karnataka. At the HMSI plant in Karnataka, the company has provided direct and indirect employment to 22,000 people in state.
The company has provided 7,000 direct employment at its new 4th assembly line. Another 15,000 indirect employment opportunities have been ushered in by the Honda’s suppliers. On the environmental front Honda’s 3rd plant is the company’s first plant with 100% rain-water harvesting and Solar power system. The plant has a state-of-the-art paint booth and an automatic air balancing system (World First in Honda’s 2wheeler operations)
