Max Chilton and Alex Buncombe have been confirmed to race for Nissan in the LMP1 category with the new Nissan GT-R LM NISMO LMP1 car for the 2015 World Endurance Championship (WEC) season thus completing the 9 driver line up.
After the Marussia F1 team went into administration, Max Chilton completed 2 seasons in Formula one has now decided to change gears and try his hand at Le Mans. Chilton hadn’t made much of a mark apart from his consistency in completing almost all races he competed in Formula 1.
In 2014, Darren Cox, Global motorsports director for Nissan had announced to Motown India that Nissan will be competing against Audi, Porsche and Toyota in the LMP1 category at Le Mans after their massive success of winning 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th at Le Mans in the LMP2 category in 2014.
Cox also hinted that maybe drivers from Nissan’s GT academy programme will drive for the team and in February, Nissan did confirm that Jann Mardenborough and Lucas Ordonez, winners of their respective seasons of the Nissan GT Academy will drive along side Nissan regular driver Michael Krumm in the recently revealed Nissan GT-R LM NISMO LMP1 car for the team which is a tremendous achievement in itself.
The numbers on the NISMO Cars will be #21, #22 and #23. Buncombe will join the team for the Le Mans 24 Hours where he will race in the #21 car with Tsugio Matsuda and Lucas Ordonez.
Max Chilton will join Marc Gene, Jann Mardenborough, Michael Krumm, Olivier Pla and Harry Tincknell for the season-opening race at Silverstone on 12 April. The configuration of the driver line-ups for the #22 and #23 Nissans will be announced at a later date.
