Auto journalists cannot travel all over the world and drive fancy cars and bikes by spending their own money. No media house will encourage that. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has passed several orders in the recent past and each need to be criticised for its shortsightedness. It passed an order banning cutting of trees in Delhi. It’s easy for any tribunal, whether green or blue, to put a ban on vehicles. Earlier, as per the Motor Vehicles norms in the country, a vehicle life was put at 15 years, beyond which the vehicle needed to be get a fitness certificate for itself. Once it cleared all kinds of fitness, whether it is its chassis strength, its metal body quality, working condition of its different lights and sensors, its tail pipe emissions, etc it would be given a new lease of life for five years.

With BMWs, Mercedes-Benzes and Audis getting popular, the need for speed on roads is understandable. These are fast cars and are safe and stable too. But no matter how broad a road you get to drive in India, you still have to be careful, because you may hit a stray goat, cow or pig. You may hit children or old people crossing without bothering to see speeding vehicles.But the worst part is that we do not have roads where we can even maintain a simple speed limit of 50kmph.

Why it is that India is not able to build good roads? Let’s take for example the stretch of road from Mehrauli to Mahipalpur in South West Delhi which sees traffic jams every single day of the year. The road is supposed to be widened as per the government plans but is stuck in litigation after some environmentalists have objected to the felling of trees.
